Scars

Scars are a natural part of the body’s healing process. Whether from cuts, burns, acne or surgery, most people will experience some form of scarring during their lifetime.

While scars are usually harmless, they can sometimes feel uncomfortable or affect confidence, especially when they are visible.

What are scars?

A scar forms when the skin repairs itself after an injury. During this process, the body produces collagen fibres to close the wound, resulting in a mark that may look and feel different from the surrounding skin.

Types of scars

Scars can vary in appearance depending on the type of injury, skin type and how well the wound heals.

Common types include:

  • flat scars – typically fade over time and become less noticeable

  • hypertrophic scars – raised and red, but remain within the boundary of the original wound

  • keloid scars – thick, raised scars that extend beyond the original injury

  • atrophic scars – sunken scars, often seen with acne or chickenpox

Tips for minimising scars

Taking care of a wound early on can make a noticeable difference in the final result. Here are steps you can take to support better healing:

  • keep the wound clean and covered while it heals

  • avoid picking at scabs or healing skin

  • keep the area moisturised

  • protect the scar from sun exposure with sunscreen or clothing

  • be patient - scars can take months to fully settle and fade

When to consider treatment

If a scar is raised, thickened, discoloured or affecting movement or comfort, treatment may be helpful. Even older scars can often be improved with the right approach, although results may take time.
